2017 Giro D'Italia winner Tom Dumoulin rode his first race since last year's knee surgery at the beach Scheveningen, the Netherlands, 12/2, lining up in a mountain bike race, placing sixth. It is also the first race since announcing he is joining the Jumbo-Visma(on Bianchi) team at the beginning of 2020. It was interesting to see Dumoulin being pictured on the KMC mountainbike team twitter riding a Sunweb Giant, last seen prior to Sunweb's switch to Cervelo. I was happy to see it, as my Advanced Pro is designed after the Sunweb Giant, and bought here at Y's Road Chigasaki. It was good to see, surprisingly, perhaps the last time we'll see Dumoulin on a Giant.
Dumoulin switched teams as he has said Sunweb were not getting the best of him and he wasn't getting the best out of Sunweb. Curiously, this occurred after the switch to Cervelo and Dumoulin's 2017 Giro win. I believe it comes down to this statement of Dumoulin's: 'I'm really looking forward to sharing the leaderships role and during the races we support the rider who is the strongest. I'd rather ride for (Primoz) Roglic so he can win the tour than that the team rides for me and I turn out sixth.'
There is talk he wants to ride the Tour and the Olympics, but it could very well end up he rides the Giro and the Olympics, while Jumbo Visma goes with Roglic in France. We shall see. It should be an exciting year for Team Jumbo Visma and the road cycling circuit. Welcome back, Tom, we missed you! Hope you come to Tokyo for the Olympics!!
